I have been driving past this place for many decades! Finally because of yelp (and Jerry’s Deli closing) I took the plunge and tried the unique family owned restaurant. I am glad I did!

Love the decor! Love the chips and salsa! Their enchiladas are great and the asada delicious!
Glad to see that some of Costa Mesa has not changed! We will be back!

Awesomely tacky decor, heaping plates of cheesy, carb-y comida Mexicana, friendly servers, and 200 different tequilas. What’s not to love? Every time I’ve come to El Matador I’ve enjoyed myself. Even chose it for my birthday dinner one year. It’s just a fun, cool place. My only real complaints are that parking can be tricky and service is sometimes a little slow and disorganized (but still friendly). Overall, though, two thumbs up.

go here whenever I feel like chowing down on some good ol’ fashioned Mexican fare: tacos, enchiladas, refried beans and rice. Not too bland, not too spicy, not too fancy, ample portions. Never lets me down. The funky, cozy little interior adds some down-home character. The Margaritas are always good and tasty. Reasonable prices, for Newport. Parking could be an issue if you don’t like searching around for a spot.

Margaritas are fantastic! El Matador is my favorite Friday night date spot. Great place to wind down after a long week. The servers are really nice and helpful. I love the Shrimp Fajitas. My husband’s favorite is the ground beef taco and the cheese enchilada with beans and rice combo.

More than 170 brands and varieties are represented, and your goal should be to try each one . . . well, maybe only the really good ones. Start with what the man behind the bar most weekdays calls “the best margarita ever”: Maestro Dobel combined with agave and freshly squeezed lime juices. It’s so tartly refreshing you’ll crave another. And with so many tequilas to sample, your day can resemble a Choose Your Own Adventure book, only with booze and the requisite fresh chips and salsa.
